For the past decade, the Internet has changed our lives and the ways to communicate. Multifarious information is full of on the Internet, just a few minutes and some clicks, you could find any information you want through the Internet. However, it’s also easy for children to access obscene, violent and other inappropriate content. To make the Internet a safer place and to ensure children’s online safety, ECPAT Taiwan has set the Internet Safety Hotline web547 on July 21st 1999, which is also the first Chinese hotline, to receive illegal and harmful reports from Internet users. ( web547 means no pornography on websites. The Chinese pronunciation of 547 is similar with the one of no pornography.)

For removing and eliminating illegal and harmful information on the Internet, web547 cooperates with the police, ISPs and other competent authorities. In the case of child pornography that is one of the serious online problem and the primary issue that concern ECPAT Taiwan, web547 will transmit the report to the 9th investigation brigade of CIB in Taiwan for further investigation. In addition, as the anonymous and transnational characteristics of the Internet, international cooperation is needed. Therefore, if the report is located in foreign country, web547 will forward it to INHOPE hotline members. For the reports which are out of Taiwanese authority and jurisdiction will be blacklisted and blocked by Computer Center of M.O.E., in order to prevent children accessing those illegal and harmful content when surfing the Internet at schools (elementary schools & junior high schools).
